Brown Eyed Susan offers a profusion of brilliant yellow flowers with jet-black centers blooming from late July up until the first hard frost. This Rudbeckia grows from two to five feet tall, in a bushy habit with an open-airy quality. Its lovely informal style is an excellent complement to any of the tall native grasses and common prairie wildflowers. Although short-lived, it self-sows readily on open soil. It prefers moderate moisture but is very adaptable, and grows in almost any soil in full sun or light shade. Brown Eyed Susan is a larval host plant for the Silvery Checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis), and the Wavy-Lined Emerald (Synchlora aerata). Bees, Butterflies, and other Pollinators will love this addition to your home or garden!

Ready 12/12-23 This yummy fruitcake originated from my grandmother (who probably got it from her mother). True, over the years, I have tweaked the original recipe but the basic flavor has remained the same. First we start with soaking the fruits & pecans with a good quality bourbon plus orange juice. This sits for a week or so and then we make the batter and bake the cake. This is truly a FRUIT cake, as there is very little cake - just enough to hold it together. The spices are not overwhelming. After baking, we carefully age the cakes with more bourbon. This is truly a delicious fruitcake - everyone I have ever shared it with has wanted the recipe. Probably should sit another week before indulging.

These lemon drop cookies are dairy-free and are inspired by my short stint working as a counter girl in a quintessential bakery in the northeastern state of Delaware.
