Tea herb, Sage, 'Berggartten Sage' plant (Salvia officinalis 'Berggartten')

Grower: A B C Nature Greenhouse and Herb Farm
Price: $8.00 ( 4" deep perennial pot )
Available (Exact): 2

The classic sage grown for centuries as a culinary herb just got better in this little plant called 'Bergartten Sage'. Fragrant leaves are used fresh or dried for winter seasonings. Abundant leaves and purple flowers provide humans and insects with a wonderful array of nectar and teas. The species of this fragrant herb is an ancient symbol of wisdom. It grows in southern Europe and the Mediterranean, and is widely cultivated by home gardeners here in the USA. A member of the mint family, its generic name comes from the Latin salvia, meaning 'health.' Sage is rich in a hydrocarbon known as salvia; as well as in other essential oils. It is astringent, aromatic, stimulating, and bitter. Early herbalists believed sage to be of value in calming one's nerves, alleviating nervous headaches, and soothing sore throats. It has long been thought to retard the aging process, enhance memory, and prevent hands from trembling and eyes from dimming. An ancient Latin proverb translates, 'How can a man die when sage grows in his garden?” Like rosemary, sage tea should be avoided by pregnant and lactating women. Height 2-3 ft., Full sun or partial shade, Leaves are the part of the plant used for tea. The taste is aromatic, camphorlike and faintly bitter. With its beautiful purple flowers, this plant is very alluring to bees. Zones 5-9.

Raspberry - Wild Black

Grower: What-A-Hobby
Price: $5.00 ( Pint (16oz) )
Available (Estimated): 2

These are all natural black raspberries from plants growing wild along our internal fence lines and creek. No pesticides, chemicals or interference - they grow up just as mother nature intends (until hubby takes a brush-hog to them periodically lol!)

The flavor varies from delicious tartness to mouthwatering sweetness and everything in between depending on the level of ripeness and the individual bush the berries come from.

They make a great snacking treat and are yummy as fruit topping or with a little honey and sugar (or ice cream!).

For freshness when delivered on Thursday, these are picked on Tuesday/Wednesday and availability is entirely dependent on being able to beat the critters to the best patches. Berries will be refrigerated and lightly rinsed.

If you are looking to make jam/jelly and need berries that have more tartness (i.e. they are less ripe) please drop me an email after you order and that is what I will send down.

Price: $1.50 ( 2" pot )

When I purchased these seeds from Totally Tomatoes 2 years ago, they compared them to the 'Campari' tomatoes on the vine at the WalMart stores.

Campbell, my granddaughter, really likes to combine these and the Sunsugar tomatoes for a sweet treat. What could be better getting anti-oxidants, lycopene, vitamin C and other great qualities out of a snack food for a 4 year old?

We hope you will love them as much as we did.

By the way, the seed packet got wet and that is why I don't really know what their name is, so I guess as I save the seed, it will be called Campbell's Favorite Tomato.

Grower: A B C Nature Greenhouse and Herb Farm
Price: $2.00 ( 2" pot )
Available (Estimated): 0

Baker Creek seems to really like this tomato since they have this to say about it: 'An unusual winter storage tomato; the fruit have thick green skin and pink flesh! Good-sized fruit can keep for a long period if picked a little prematurely and kept cool and dry. Nice-flavored winter tomatoes are such a treat compared to grocery store tomatoes. A hard-to-find tomato that has been preserved by members of Seed Savers Exchange.'

Besides, did you know that back in the olden days, the fried green tomatoes actually came from ripe green tomatoes and not green red tomatoes. Ewhhhhhh. I have eaten the real fried green tomatoes and they are scrumptious.

There is one testimonial on the Baker Creek site and it is this:
Acidic, but sweeter with storage Review by Mooiemoo

Overall Rating:A tasty and fun tomato -- the inside really is pink, though the skin stays green. Highly acidic, yummy flavor when picked. Acidity mellows somewhat with storage. Did pretty well in our Central Ohio garden in 2011(the rainiest year on record). Kept well in the fridge, but we ate them all before giving them a long storage test. Do not store with apples or they (the tomatoes) will spoil in a hurry due to the ethylene gas from the apples.. (Posted on 2/25/12)

If you like or enjoy high acid plants, you are going to love these beauties. I had to chase my husband around for 30 minutes before he would actually stop. I was trying to get him to take a bite and he kept saying that thing is rotten. He is right, but after he closed his eyes and took a bite, he grabbed the whole tomato from me and ate it. He has not eaten a yellow pear since.

I know you will totally enjoy these. Be brave and try something new!

This is what Baker Creek Heirloom seeds has to say about this wonderful tomato:
80-90 days. This fine variety was sent to us by our friend, famed seed collector and food writer, William Woys Weaver, of Pennsylvania. It was passed down to him from his Quaker grandfather’s collection dating back to the 1920s. As to its history, Will states "The 'true' Black Brandywine was bred sometime in the late 1920s by Dr. Harold E. Martin (1888-1959), a dentist turned plant breeder who is best remembered today for his famous pole lima with huge seeds. Dr. Martin lived in Westtown, PA, only a few miles from my grandfather’s place in West Chester, and the two were gardening buddies. It was through that connection that his grandfather managed to wheedle seed out of the good doctor, as well as the details on how he created it. Dr. Martin always had a high opinion of his plant creations and did not like to share them–he charged 25 cents a seed for his lima, unheard of in those days. And he never released his Black Brandywine to a seed company, nor did he share it with many people, so I am fairly certain it never circulated among growers like his popular lima bean. According to my grandfather, Black Brandywine was a controlled cross between Brandywine and the original brown Beefsteak tomato otherwise known as Fejee Improved. Fejee Improved is probably extinct." We thank Will for entrusting us with this great-tasting tomato that is extra large in size and full of the deep, earthy and sweet flavor that has made blackish-purple tomatoes so popular. Some fruits tended to crack, but the yield was heavy, and the plants were vigorous and did well in our hot Missouri summer. Superior for salsa and cooking. We enjoyed these all summer, both fresh and in countless recipes. A great home garden variety that will surely become a favorite. See Mr Weaver's article about this tomato in the Winter 06/07 issue of "The Heirloom Gardener" magazine.

So, I know you will enjoy this tomato tremendously!

Grower: A B C Nature Greenhouse and Herb Farm
Price: $2.00 ( 2" pot )

75 days, Bountiful harvest of long fruits that are 5" long and 1/2" think often curled and twisted. The flavor is red hot and best used in very hot dishes. These are great for drying and preserving for later use. Cayenne is a stimulating herb which has been used medicinally for thousands of years. The main medicinal properties of cayenne are derived from a chemical called capsaicin. Capsaicin is the ingredient which gives peppers their HEAT. A pepper's capsaicin content ranges from 0-1.5%. Generally, the hotter the pepper, the more capsaicin it contains. In addition to adding heat to the pepper, capsaicin acts to reduce platelet stickiness and relieve pain. Other constituents of cayenne are vitamins E, vitamin C and carotenoids. Today cayenne is used worldwide to treat a variety of health conditions, including poor circulation, weak digestion, heart disease, chronic pain, sore throats, headaches and toothache. Ayurveda (The word "Ayurveda" is from the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit, and literally means "Knowledge of Life") also utilizes cayenne to treat poor digestion and gas. Chinese medicine uses cayenne for digestive ailments.

This is a wonderful pepper that was brought back from Cuba when my friend Herb visited Cuba many years ago. He then passed it on to Baker Creek where I finally obtained some of the seeds. I have had it ever since and try to share seed whenever I can.

My friend, Herb, found this little out of the way food joint when he discovered this pepper. He talked to the cook whom told him this pepper had been grown by his family for many generations.

If you are like your pepper sweet when you bite into it then as it goes down a little warm, you will totally enjoy this pepper.

Herb: Medicinal Marjoram, Pot marjoram or also known as Turkish marjoram plant (Origanum onites)

Grower: A B C Nature Greenhouse and Herb Farm
Price: $4.00 ( 2" pot )
Available (Exact): 3

Are your taste buds tired and run down? Wake them up with this reveille of flavor. Cretan Oregano, also known as Turkish oregano and Pot marjoram has the flavor of imported Italian Oregano, the taste you find on pizza from a good Italian restaurant. Use it sparingly at first; it is very strong.

Cretan Oregano or Pot Marjoram is so easy to grow. The most common problem with growing Oregano is that at some point midway through the growing season the plant becomes woody, and tough and the flavor becomes bitter. Either cut the entire plant back close to the ground and a new flush of fresh foliage will appear in a couple of weeks, or wait until the flower heads have formed and use these. It's a good idea to have at least 2 Oregano plants so you can cut one back and still have one to use fresh. The sturdy sticks of Cretan Oregano can be cut into 8 to 10 inch pieces, dried and bundled for gift giving. Many herbs make simple yet welcome gifts to those who don't or can't garden.

Growing culture includes: Height 18", culinary and medicinal herbaceous plant, USDA zones 8 to 11. Because it is on the borderline of our zone, I recommend you grow it in a pot so you can take inside during the winter and still enjoy its luscious flavor.

Native Wildflower: Coneflower, Tennessee purple or Rocky Top purple coneflower plant (Echinacea tennesseensis)

Grower: A B C Nature Greenhouse and Herb Farm
Price: $10.00 ( 4" deep perennial pot )
Available (Exact): 3

An herbaceous perennial grown in Tennessee homeland. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. This coneflower must be grown in isolation from other species of Echinacea (several miles) if you are wanting to harvest seed that retains the genetic integrity of the endangered species. Also, if planted with other species or cultivars of Echinacea, it may be crowded out due to its less vigorous growth habit. This U.S. native plant, commonly known as Tennessee coneflower, is only known to exist naturally on certain glades near Nashville, Tennessee. A daisy-like coneflower which features slightly upturned, rose-purple petals (also known as ray flowers) and spiny, coppery center disks with a green tinge. Long summer bloom period from June until August. Flowers grow on rigid stems up to 2.5' tall, with dark green, linear foliage. This species is very similar to E. purpurea (Missouri native), except that E. tennesseensis is somewhat less vigorous and smaller, and has shorter, more upturned ray flowers, a vertical rootstock and more narrow, linear leaves. The plant was on the endangered species list but was removed in 2011 because of people taking notice it was beginning to be a dying species. USDA zones 5 to 7.
